Here are 4 tips to help you develop a clearer Accent!
1) SLOW DOWN
Speaking too fast reinforces bad habits and makes the speaker sound nervous and indecisive. Speaking slowly will give you time to breathe properly and think about what you want to say next. You’ll feel more relaxed and be able to concentrate on making your message sound fantastic.
2) GET PHYSICAL
Pronunciation is a physical skill. You’re teaching your mouth a new way to move and using different muscles. Put in the time to rehearse and practice the more difficult sounds DAILY.
3) WATCH YOURSELF IN MIRROR
Did you know that dancers practice and rehearse in front of the mirror? Professional athletes watch videos of themselves practising their movements to assess and make improvements. As pronunciation is ALSO about learning to move your muscles, you need to do the same! Use a mirror to see the placement of your tongue, lips, and shape of your mouth when you make certain sounds. Compare what you see with a video of a native-speaker saying the same thing.
4) SING ALONG TO ENGLISH SONGS
Pull out some lyrics. Singing allows you to relax and enjoy yourself while practising your rhythm and intonation. The great thing about it is you don’t need to worry about making your own sentences! Instead, you can focus 100% on making your pronunciation sound awesome!
